Üsküdar’s municipal council met on 20 October and elected Muhammed Emin Sarıoğlu as acting mayor. The People’s Alliance candidate received 24 votes in the third round.
Three rounds of voting
According to the source, Sarıoğlu was the sole candidate and also received 24 votes in each of the first two rounds. CHP and YENİ Party did not nominate candidates.
Why another election was needed
Dündar Ziya Gültekin, selected after Sinem Dedetaş was detained and removed from office, died in a road accident on 15 October. Istanbul’s governor then called the council together to choose a successor.
Meaning for residents
The decision places municipal leadership with an acting mayor selected by councillors; it is not a new direct local election. Residents should follow the administration’s service announcements and council decisions. Proceedings concerning the previous mayor are separate from this vote.
