Surgery officially confirmed

Fenerbahçe have announced that Marco Asensio will undergo surgery for a cartilage lesion behind his kneecap. In the club’s statement published at 4pm Turkish time on October 18, team doctor Ahmet Kulduk said the operation was planned for next week. The statement contains comments made to FB TV by Kulduk and football director Oğuz Çetin.

How the situation developed

According to the club’s account, treatment for swelling and pain was followed by an MRI examination. Kulduk said specialist opinions had also been obtained in Turkey and Spain. He stressed that surgery had not been indicated for the earlier injuries; the decision concerns the newly identified cartilage lesion.

Further information

Bezmiâlem Vakıf University Hospital explains that joint cartilage covers the ends of bones and helps them move smoothly. Damage can be associated with pain and swelling; treatment depends on features including its location, size and depth. This general information does not establish which surgical technique Asensio will receive or his individual recovery time.

What it means for supporters and the team

Surgery and recovery could affect the player’s availability for the coaching staff’s attacking plans. However, the official statement gives no definite return date, surgical method or number of matches he will miss. Reports published earlier in the day suggested at least two months out, but that timetable is not confirmed by this club statement. Postoperative updates and information on his return to training will be important for assessing squad expectations.
