TYH Tekstil chairman Selçuk Mehmet Kaya says the company’s factory count has fallen from 13 to six and its workforce from 6,900 to 1,900. In remarks to Ekonomim columnist Vahap Munyar, he described the loss of 5,000 jobs during the company’s contraction.

Clothing production cut back

Kaya said the business was undergoing a court-supervised debt restructuring process and had been hit hard by economic difficulties. Ready-made clothing production had suffered particularly substantial cuts.

Focus turns to fabric

Founded in 2000, the company is now concentrating on fabric and considering technical textiles, Kaya said. It is therefore continuing production with fewer sites and employees, rather than announcing the end of all operations.

The workforce figures represent a reduction of roughly 72 per cent. They show how the company’s retrenchment has affected thousands of employees as well as its manufacturing footprint.
